What is Karate?

Karate is a martial art based on the principles of self-defense. It was developed by people who were denied the use of weapons, hence the name “karate” or “empty hand”. The student of the art can be taught to use the hands and feet in such a way that he or she can defend against one or more attackers.

Yet Karate is more than a means of self-defense. To the serious student, it is a mental as well as physical discipline, an art of great depth and value for personal growth. Consistent, diligent practice of the physical technique will also develop spiritual qualities such as self-respect and self-discipline, confidence and equanimity. Like other Oriental arts, Karate is a paradox; the overt physical boldness of Karate training leads eventually to harmony of body and mind. This, as much as self-defense, is the art of Karate.
